Even in those early years, long before learning pressure points, GM Bowman was leading the way. His Karate association was the only one at the time teaching its students how to break fall correctly and how to integrate throwing techniques and joint locks into their training. But GM Bowman always felt, however, that there was something missing from his training. It was in 1989 that GM Bowman was invited to a Seminar hosted by Leon Jay (the son of Professor Wally Jay, the founder of Small Circle Jujitsu) in Leatherhead. It was a pressure point seminar and the instructor was Professor George Dillman. GM Bowman was sceptical at first about pressure points, but he believes it is very important to have an open mind and try things out for yourself rather than relying on hearsay. It was during this seminar GM Bowman realised that it was the use of pressure points that had been missing from his Karate training. Prof Dillman approached GM Bowman during the seminar and told him that he was a great blocker, but asked him if he thought he could defend himself against any of the big guys, who were attending the seminar, if they were to attack him for real. As GM Bowman is only 5 foot 3 inches tall it meant that most of the people attending the seminar were bigger than him and most of them were also high grades. GM Bowman thought about it and agreed that a skilled big guy will always have the advantage over the skilled wee guy. Prof Dillman showed GM Bowman how pressure points would give him that extra advantage to even the playing field. From that day GM Bowman’s study of pressure points began. He travelled over to America frequently to train with Prof Dillman and began doing his own study and research. In 1992 he returned to Japan and graded for his 6th Dan under Sensei Osaka (8th Dan) and Sensei Tabata (7th Dan). But his true passion was now with the DKI (Dillman Karate International) and learning the art of Kyusho Jitsu (pressure point fighting) under Prof Dillman. Because of his involvement with the DKI it led GM Bowman to train extensively with both Professor Wally Jay and Professor Remy Presas (founder of Modern Arnis). GM Bowman has combined the techniques and principles of these three martial arts pioneers, leading to him teaching a truly unique and effective system. Grandmaster Bowman is the official Dillman Karate International representative in the UK. A lot of people misunderstand what Kyusho Jitsu is. Simply put, it is the study of the weaker anatomical structures of the human body.
